Sustainability Progress: Advancing Reporting and Carbon Reduction Goals

Tasowheel has a long-standing tradition of partnering with universities and students to foster innovation and address key industry opportunities.  These collaborations not only support academic development but also provide valuable insights that help us refine our operations and achieve meaningful improvements.

One such partnership recently resulted in a master thesis by Meri Lehtisaari, mechanical engineering student at Tampere University. The research focused on sustainability reporting and carbon footprint calculations, offering actionable recommendations for advancing our environmental practices.

The study explored key frameworks such as the European Union’s Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive (CSRD), European Sustainability Reporting Standards (ESRS), and the Voluntary Sustainability Reporting Standard for SMEs (VSME). It also included a detailed product-specific carbon footprint calculation and an evaluation of company-wide carbon data.

Key Takeaways and Actions

The insights gained from Meri’s master thesis have highlighted important opportunities for progress:

  • Carbon Reduction Opportunities: Switching to emission-free electricity was identified as a simple yet impactful step to lower emissions.
  • Material Efficiency: The study revealed opportunities to reduce material waste during production and the increase of recycled content.
  • Enhanced Reporting: Recognizing the growing importance of sustainability reporting for customers, we are adopting the VSME standard to better communicate our efforts and achievements.
Ensuring the material suppliers sustainability efforts are at an acceptable level plays an important role also in reaching Tasowheel’s sustainability goals

Next Steps on the Journey

We are building on these insights by creating a sustainability roadmap with clear, measurable goals. To ensure continuous improvement, we have introduced an initiative system encouraging employees to propose ideas for advancing environmental efforts.

With ISO 14001 certification and an EcoVadis sustainability assessment already affirming our progress, these results further strengthen our commitment to a more sustainable future. Together, we are making meaningful strides in reducing our environmental impact and fostering a culture of sustainability.
